Episode XXV: A Family Visit

I have been privileged to have my family visiting here in the Midwest these last two weeks. They spent two days staying with me in Lawrence, and two weeks staying with distant relatives and church friends in Kansas City.


Many good times were had by all. Some of the recurring themes for me:

Frisbee. I played quite a bit of Frisbee, including Frisbee in the rain, Frisbee on a tower, Frisbee in a KU fountain, and at least five rounds of Frisbee-golf.


Driving. I worked full-time while my family was out here, and when I wasn’t working, I was in Kansas City with the family and/or attending the two-week-long-meeting along with them. This entailed a great deal of driving back and forth, as well as some rather odd work-hours.

Heat & Humidity. Working in a lab that is about sixty degrees all day every day, it is easy to forget how much H&H there can be here in the Midwest. However, I was consistently reminded of this fact every time I would get into the steaming car to drive from Lawrence to Kansas City.

BBQ. I really didn’t eat that much BBQ, but it seemed like a good thing to write about after being in Kansas City for a couple of weeks. I probably had four meals’ worth of BBQ, and there was some very, very delicious food to be had. So now I can say that there is at least one thing that I like about Missouri.

I look so cute when i'm sleeping. luckily you didn't have the flash on like when carol did it (: Thanks for letting us trash your place and leave your door open. The dodgers did pretty bad while we were gone (if you didn't already know).

And now... the moment you have all been waiting for... (0r at least the moment Mom has been waiting for...) Pictures of THE JAYHAWKER TOWERS! That is, pictures of the place where I'm living. There are four towers, with six or seven stories each, and maybe ten units per floor. Each unit consists of four rooms, including two bedrooms. Floorplans can be found here. A guy I know who comes from Costa Rica calls them the “yay-hawk towers,” and my roommate once had a letter sent to him with the address “Jay Hock tower”. The official name is The Jayhawker Towers, although people in the know just call them The Towers. I don’t really consider them to be dorms, since they have two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living room and a kitchen; but I don’t consider them to be apartments either, since they are owned by the university and rent out by the school year. Episode CXCVI: Seasons

The Norrises have lived in California for 10 months now, which means we've experienced all four seasons. After living in a geographically boring place for many years (Dallas), we've made the most of our new geographical settings, as seasonally appropriate. First: in winter, we went up the mountains and enjoyed the snow. In spring, we stayed around Riverside, hiking the hills and mountains while the weather was cool and the hills were green. In summer we went to the beach. We also returned to the mountains. Cabin Number 11 In the fall we headed to the desert. Episode XCVIII: Love & Marriage

I got married! It's been a couple of months, but I am now prepared to upload some photos and video of the day. The day began with a photo shoot in a park near my parents' house. It was a lovely day, and we got some really lovely photos (Thanks to Steven, Deyon, Quinn and Jenny). I then had a Hot Pocket and spilled some Dr. Pepper on my shirt (did anyone notice??) Then it was off to the church building in Anaheim, for setup and some more familial pictures. And of course, it could hardly be a Norris family event without a little bit of Frisbee playing. Did I mention our theme was daisies? The wedding went really well, thanks to loads of help from loads of people. You all know who you are, and Meg and I really appreciate your efforts. It made the wedding go very pleasantly. Perhaps you will not be surprised to hear that one of my favorite parts of the wedding was the food.
