Episode CXXVII: Spring (?)

With each passing year since moving away from Southern California, the winters seem to just keep getting longer. As I write these words in the waning days of April, the flowers are blooming and the trees are budding, but the weather has dipped back down into the chilly forties.

Parental Visit

With overly-optimistic enthusiasm, I suggested that my parents come visit us in Cambridge sometime in April to see the city in bloom. They came in early April, at which point we had no flowers, few buds, and chilly temperatures. Nevertheless, we managed to do quite a few fun things. In addition to the usual touristy things, we decided to rent some Hubway Bikes to ride around town and along the Charles River.

We had an authentic New England experience, eating donuts from Dunkin'.

We also took a day trip out to Lexington/Concord/Lincoln, where we visited Walden Pond, of Thoreau/Walden fame. It is a surprisingly nice place. Here I am warming myself by the replica fireplace of Thoreau's hand-made cabin.

And of course we toured the labs. Mom was unusually interested in my work, and she got to spend a good half-hour helping me with one of my experiments.

Easter

The day before Easter, one of the few nice days so far this Spring, Meg and I volunteered with our church in a community outreach event, where hundreds (if not thousands) of local parents and kids came out to this park straddling Cambridge and Boston for Easter egg hunting, game playing, and general merriment.

Meg got a specially-priveleged position- she was the Easter Bunny!
