Episode LX: Adam Norris, Information Technologist (Part I)

As some of you may know, I have been “working” in a sort of part-time job in addition to my full schedule of researching, teaching and attending seminars. Basically, at the beginning of the semester, the Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences sent a memo out to graduate students that the school needed someone to be on-call to help with any potential technical issues that may come up from time to time in the university’s evening-hour teleconference classes.

So I applied, and got the job. It’s pretty cool because all I really have to do is just sit in lab and do my own thing, waiting for a phone call (which is a very rare occurrence). And the system is pretty well-built, so most problems I have encountered have been very minor and easy to fix. So, in other words, I get paid a decent hourly wage (10 hours a week) for doing a little bit of IT work, and a whole lot of nothing. I’m certainly not complaining.

Finally, a perk of my new job: my very own Blackberry! Stay tuned for part II of this episode for the Blackberry story. For now, though, the upshot of this story is that I can currently describe my employment as that of a researcher, teacher, and IT professional.
